Exciting new research shows that PEMF increases peripheral nerve regeneration in stroke and Parkinson’s Disease, improving symptoms such as tremor, slowness of movement and difficulty in walking. Cumulative evidence supports the hypothesis that PD is the result of complex interactions among genetic abnormalities, environmental toxins and mitochondrial dysfunction and so it makes sense that PEMF can address the detoxification and energy aspects of the disease. The mechanisms and therapeutic applications of electromagnetic therapy in Parkinson’s disease is discussed in detail in this 2015 study.

In another study, PEMF produced a highly beneficial effect in patients with Parkinson disease and restless legs syndrome. Compared with standard of care in Parkinson’s such as dopaminergic systemic therapy, such as “l-dopa”, PEMF offers the benefits of avoiding systemic side effects such as hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity and being accessible to patients in their own home. PEMF can be combined with physical therapy and cognitive tasks to produce additive benefits in Parkinson’s.
